Aim of the training
The aim of the training was to raise awareness of the need to safeguard & protect adults and those working with them – to increase the knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and procedures and how to implement them when necessary.
The term used for activities which prevent harm from taking place and which protects adults at risk (where harm has occurred or is likely to occur without intervention).
Safeguarding guides voluntary and paid staff on how to protect themselves and adults they work with.
What is abuse?
‘Abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to another individual or violates their human or civil rights’. – Action on Elder Abuse : definition of abuse 1993 www.elderabuse.org.uk
Abuse is the misuse of power and control that one person has over another. It can involve direct and indirect contact and can include online abuse.
Who can be abusers?
Why do some adults keep it to themselves?
There are many reasons why adults may keep it to themselves. Reasons include, but are not limited to fear of consequences, love, loyalty, bribery, guilt, to protect others or perhaps they are unable to communicate.
Learning outcomes for the volunteers
- Identify what is meant by safeguarding adults
- Highlight the relevant legislation & the policies that safeguard adults and adults at risk
- Understand what is abuse and who abuses
- Respond appropriately to concerns of abuse using policies and procedures
- Describe a code of behaviour for staff
